About Our Aggression and Reactivity Programs

Training and Management

Our aggression rehabilitation program spans a duration of four to six weeks, targeting dogs exhibiting aggressive behavior towards either people or other animals. These behaviors may manifest as growling, snapping, or even aggressive attacks. Our experienced animal behaviorist will initiate the process by identifying the underlying causes of this aggression, which may encompass factors such as fear, dominance, insecurity, and various other triggers.

Once the root cause is pinpointed, we will craft a customized plan designed to assist your dog in overcoming their aggressive tendencies. Throughout the rehabilitation program, we will impart essential skills to your dog, enabling them to exhibit appropriate behavior both within the confines of your home and in public settings, such as parks or stores.

Why Choose Crystal Coast Canine

Aggression in dogs is a significant concern that should not be tackled independently by the owner. Attempting to address aggression without a clear understanding of its root causes often exacerbates the problem. Our team of skilled animal behaviorists specializes in pinpointing the underlying causes of aggression and educating pet owners on the proper approach to managing their pet’s aggressive tendencies.

At Coastal Canine Solutions, we prioritize comprehensive training for both dogs and their owners. Our approach begins with instructing dogs on the desired behaviors while clearly defining behaviors we wish to discourage. Subsequently, we ensure that pet owners are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to reinforce these teachings effectively.

Expectations

Our Aggression Rehabilitation Program typically spans 4 to 6 weeks, with the exact duration depending on the severity of the issues exhibited by your dog.

Throughout the training period, your dog will remain under our care and guidance. During this intensive training, we focus on instilling obedience and control while addressing your dog’s aggression problems. It’s important to understand that dealing with aggressive dogs is not a quick fix, which is why our training program extends over a more extended period. While we cannot alter the genetic composition of your dog, we empower you with absolute control and provide you with the necessary skills to manage your dog effectively.

Upon completion of the program, we invest 3-6 hours of dedicated time to educate you and demonstrate the progress your dog has made.

For ongoing support, we offer maintenance training throughout your dog’s lifetime, ensuring that they do not revert to their previous behavior patterns. All our board and train programs come with the added benefit of lifetime support.

In addition to our core program, we provide complimentary pack walks, creating a controlled environment where dogs and their owners can collectively work on their training. During these group walks, a community of individuals and their dogs walk together, reinforcing the training and promoting positive behavior around both people and animals.

Understanding Aggression

Dog aggression can stem from various underlying reasons, making it crucial to pinpoint the cause to effectively address and mitigate it.

One common trigger for canine aggression is illness or injury, especially if the aggressive behavior is a recent development. In such cases, the initial step in managing an aggressive dog is to consult a veterinarian and conduct a thorough health examination to rule out any potential medical issues.

Once the veterinarian confirms the dog’s good health, it becomes imperative to explore other potential causes of aggression, which may include:

  1. Fear
  2. Possession aggression or resource guarding
  3. Dominance
  4. Frustration or redirected aggression
  5. Predatory aggression

Predatory aggression can be particularly concerning, as it often triggers a strong hunting instinct in the dog, leading to the pursuit and potential attack of perceived prey, whether another animal or even a child.

In cases of redirected aggression, the dog may be unable to reach its primary target or trigger, resulting in an outburst of aggression toward a more accessible target.

Resource guarding involves the dog protecting items such as food dishes or toys, and this behavior can escalate over time. It may begin with simple warning signals like growling when someone approaches its possessions and may progress to biting.

Given the multitude of factors contributing to dog aggression, it is imperative to seek professional guidance from a qualified trainer. Our team will assess your dog’s specific situation and develop a tailored plan to address the issue effectively and help you and your pet find a suitable path forward.
